Lighting: The Often-Overlooked Element of Interior Design

When designing a room, it's not just about the flooring, decor, and furniture. Lighting plays a crucial role in how a space feels and functions. Used effectively, it can completely transform a room, helping to create the atmosphere you want in your home. It can also highlight statement features and brighten gloomy corners.

Take a Good Look Around

When choosing your lighting options, think beyond the central ceiling fixture. Take a photograph of your room and identify areas where shadows fall or corners seem too dark. Are you planning to display artwork, bookshelves, or a special collection?

Also consider how the room will be used. Is it a place to relax, watch TV, or read? Is it a workspace, or will it need practical, task-focused lighting like a kitchen does?

Layered Lighting

Create a balanced space with layered lighting. Start with your central ceiling light, then add layers to suit your needs. For example, in the living room, you might want to highlight pictures, posters, or photographs. Would you like shelf lighting? Do you have a piece of furniture or a plant that could serve as a focal point?

Layered lighting means combining multiple types of lighting in one room. A good example in a lounge might include a ceiling fixture, a freestanding floor lamp, and a few table lamps placed strategically.

Lighting Shelves and Cabinets

To illuminate cabinets or shelving, consider using LED light strips, recessed shelf lights, or small LED spotlights. You can also use lightboxes or battery-operated candles to add a soft, ambient glow.

Functional Lighting for Kitchens

In kitchens, lighting needs to be both functional and stylish. A statement pendant light works well over a central island or main workspace. Spotlights can illuminate the room’s perimeter, while under-cabinet lighting is perfect for brightening countertops where tasks are performed.

Dimmer switches give you control over the lighting in a room. They allow you to adjust brightness to suit your mood or activity—whether you want a cozy atmosphere or bright task lighting. Plus, they help save energy and extend the life of your bulbs, reducing how often you need to replace them.
